VIDOCK DES BERGERS AVENTUREUX
Vidock
Meet Vidock
Vidock is a two-year-old Beauceron imported from the Netherlands by myself, Stacy Crivello of Côté Obscur Beaucerons, and Alice Wang of Odyssey Chihuahuas & Australian Cattle Dogs.
Bringing Vidock to the United States was a decision made with a lot of thought and consideration. His pedigree encompasses many of the attributes that both Stacy and I are looking for within our breeding programs, and we are excited to see what his future holds. As with every dog, though, a pedigree is only the beginning. Now comes the process of getting to know the dog himself.
Vidock arrived in the United States in July and has spent most of his first few months simply adjusting to an entirely new life. New people, a new home, new boundaries and expectations, and a very different environment are a lot for any dog to take in. We have intentionally given him time to settle while slowly introducing him to different activities and figuring out what he genuinely enjoys.
He has had some exposure to sheep and is definitely interested, but his enthusiasm for bite work has been impossible to miss. He has attended several bite work classes and absolutely LOVES it. At this point, we will most likely pursue that direction with him rather than focusing heavily on herding.
We have also started working more seriously on obedience. Vidock is a dog who truly enjoys working and is happiest when he has an opportunity to engage his brain. Giving him a job, asking him to think, and building that working relationship with him has been incredibly rewarding.
His health testing begins at the beginning of October, and we are anxiously looking forward to getting through this next step. Those results will ultimately help determine what his future looks like within our breeding programs and how we move forward with his training.
Like every dog in our program, nothing is guaranteed simply because we have hopes for him. If his health testing supports moving forward, we will continue developing and evaluating him. If the results tell us that we need to make different plans, then we will adjust those plans accordingly.
Either way, Vidock’s place in our lives isn’t dependent on a set of test results.
Regardless of what October brings, this boy has a home with us. His value to us extends far beyond what he may or may not contribute to a breeding program, and we are excited to see where this journey takes him.
